How do I install Bright on Xen Cloud Platform?


Assuming that you have installed Xen Cloud Platform (XCP) 1.6.


XCP can be managed via the CLI or various 3rd party management tools and interfaces.

In this article OpenXenManager will be used. This is a graphical interface to manage XCP hosts through the network. OpenXenManager is an open-source multiplatform clone of XenCenter (Citrix).


1. Create A Xen VM for the Head Node


Using OpenXenManager

a. Click on “VM” in the menu bar and choose “New...”

b. Choose “Other install media” as a template and click “Next”





c. Choose a name for the virtual machine and click “Next”. You can add a description if you like.


d. Choose the source of the repository, either physical DVD drive or ISO image, and click “Next”.



e. Choose the VM Home Server and click “Next”.



f. Choose the number of CPUs and the amount of memory required for the Head Node VM and click “Next”.




g. Add a virtual disk for the VM and click “Next”.



h. Add virtual interfaces for the VM and click “Next”.




i. Finally, click “Finish” to start creating the VM.


2. Manage VMS with openxenmanager


After creating the VM, it will be listed in the left Panel, under the Home Server to which it belongs. It can be started by right clicking on it and choosing “Start”, or by clicking on the “Start” button under the main menu.



3. Load xen_blkfront kernel module


The “xen_blkfront” module should be added to the list of detected modules in order for Bright to be able to detect the "xvdb" disks. The following steps should be followed to add the missing module.


a. At the detected modules screen, press Alt+Ctrl+F2 simultaneously to switch to the command line from the graphical installation interface.

b. Log in as “root” with no password.

c. Add the missing module by typing “modprobe xen_blkfront”

d. Press Alt+Ctrl+F9 to switch back to the graphical interface and proceed with the installation.


4. Continue installing Bright as mentioned in the Administrator Manual
